J.K Rowling's debut novel comes out September 27th !
The summary: (amazon.com)
"When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults".

Summary:
At Mount Washington High School there's an ugly tradition; every year on the week of homecoming, an anonymous student creates a list on which for each grade he or she elects the prettiest, and the ugliest girl.
This year on the Monday of that week, eight new girls have been chosen, and their life is going to take a turn from this day on whether it's for the better or the worse. Secrets will be revealed, the past will come to haunt the present, and most of all hearts will be broken.
My Opinion:
At first glance one might think that all eight characters are solely the stereotypes that they represent (there's the jock, the cheerleader, the new girl, the rebel, the mean girl, the freshman, the popular junior, and the school freak.), but the reader soon finds out that there is much more to their personality than just their label. Due to the level of depth with which Siobhan Vivian explores her characters, one realizes that all of them, even the ones who seem perfect on the outside (all of the pretty girls.) have their faults and issues.
The grade I give this book: 9/10; I would give it a 10/10 if it were a little longer because I feel that because of how short the book is (approximately 330 pages for eight main characters), a few characters didn't get a lot of attention. Also, even if the end of the book is meant to be ambiguous given the contents of its plot, In my opinion it should be a little more clear and a little less sudden.
